Design

The first thing that catches most people’s eyes, especially on social media, is the visual. Throughout my time as Social Media Coordinator, my focus was creating content that would catch viewers’ eyes and maintain a cohesive brand from our website and magazine. With my plan in place, I redesigned the social media and when iliad redesigned our brand and logo, I also created templates to fit the new design.

iliad Design

Design Templates

In preparation for the spring semester, I helped create templates for different genres of pieces that we feature in the iliad. My assignment was to create a template for music pieces within the iliad. I used inspiration from the previous iliad to generate a template that we could adapt once we decided on the theme for this year’s magazine.

Logo Redesign

This year the iliad conducted a brand redesign, as the program has not had a consistent logo in almost a decade. As a part of the process, I worked alongside my Co-Editor-in-chief and the Design editor to provide extensive feedback on the logo and redesign. During the feedback sessions, I gave input on design, color and the final logos which we now use to represent our brand across all platforms.

Website Font Design

As part of the website redesign process, I coded in the fonts from our logo to be featured on the website. By doing this, I ensured that the design of our brand and logo also completely carried over to the website. In addition to fonts, I helped design a majority of the pages on the website to create and clean and simple layout for our audience to view.

Social Media Design

  • Breaking News Template

Our social media is where we often public almost all of our breaking news. Social media is a very image-driven platform, which means having a visually appealing and recognizable look is important. Prior to my time running social media, we had a social media graphic for breaking news. However, I redesigned it to match our overall brand better and create a cohesive design throughout both online and print formats.

  • Player Cards

A project I took on during my time as a social media coordinator was “player cards”. These posts were visually-driven, so I incorporated the design into my creation of these posts to catch viewers’ attention. I decided to focus on fewer words and bigger fonts to highlight the quote or accomplishment on the player cards, as well as the featured photo in the post.

  • Q&A Template

Before the Q&A template, our social media promoted Q&As using a normal photo and caption. I design this template to create a “sneak peek” for our audience to allow them to be more compelled to go from our social media to our website to read the rest of the Q&A. I pulled inspiration from my breaking news post design when creating this template, to continue the same theme throughout our Instagram.

  • iliad Social Media Templates

This year our iliad social media coordinator is a freshman, so I created many templates for her to use and refer to throughout her training process on staff. These templates I designed to fit the overall rebrand of the iliad, which we generated this year. My overall goal in creating these templates is to help create a cohesive and well-design theme for our social media.

  • Awards Slides

During my time as the social media coordinator, I began posting our results from journalism conventions on social media through the form of “awards slides”. These slides often go through a lot of editing relating to fonts and font sizing. The hardest part of these posts was maintaining cohesiveness throughout the slides and making sure to display all image in a visually appealing way.
